Chennai checklist

30 11 2008

Some more things added to the list of accomplishments during our sojourn in Chennai…

  • Drive round the city with the OH in a two-wheeler.
  • Shop till you drop & not have the OH complain the entire time or ask me to go on my own
  • A lovely Indo chinese dinner with family
  • Walk through the streets of the suburb where I grew up
  • Take a walk by the beach with the OH in tow
  • Take Meg with me on the local public transport (Pallavan Transport Corporation) and show her the school where mama studied, the college where dad studied & the route we rode the cycle to and from school.
  • Walked through crazy T.Nagar wondering how we ever survived there a long time back.
  • Talked to the friend I have known for years after leaving this country who is now back here experiencing life in Chennai. Was awesome catching up with Terri’s mom.

Off to Kerala tomorrow for a vacation. Posting will resume after our return or if I can find internet connectivity & access to a computer at the hotels :)

Thanksgiving – a sad day indeed!

28 11 2008

Thanksgiving came and went as we sat numb, glued to the television watching Mumbai being torched. What a way to begin a vacation in my home country. All I can be thankful for now is that my little world is safe but that gives me little comfort. Watching fellow human beings suffer and feeling helpless is extremely painful. I know that we will rise from the ashes but if there is any justice in this world, the people who brought this on should die a painful death.

Chennai – we are here!

25 11 2008

After a looong flight, we are now home. Few things that have been accomplished thus far…

  • Getting connected – with a new local cell phone to stay connected to anybody who cares to call me ;)
  • Spend time with the new baby & her rowdy brother :)
  • Tried out chaat @ Gangotree (wading through waters in the midst of a torrential downpour). Nothing was going to keep me away from trying this place out.
  • Catching up on my favorite blogs thanks to jet lag at 3:45 am.

Lots more to do. Notes will be short given that there are too many people waiting in line to use the computer.

Countdown is winding down

22 11 2008

… and the excitement knows no bounds as we are just a day away from boarding the flight that takes us home to family, fun & reunions. The kids wrap school up for the year today and get a nice reprieve from all their activities for a while, not to mention all the pampering from the thathas, pattis, chithis, perimmas et al.

Got to love mom. She already has the first two days of arrival completely planned out with activities ranging from spending time with brand new niece, to shopping, to eating all her home cooked food :) Am sure she will have the remainder of our trip planned out by the time we get back from our vacation getaway in India.

I still hope to catch up on my blog reading and writing intermittently. Will be posting as time permits with all the activities from the home away from home.

Allergies – the inherited kind!

21 11 2008

faamRelatively new the world of blogging, it has been a wonderful experience thus far. To be able to read, write and relate & disagree with the thoughts and ideas of people from all walks of life has been amazing, refreshing, entertaining, cathartic and last but not the least extremely educative. The people I have met and reached out to are awesome and the things I have learned and absorbed are one too many to count.

How else would I know about Food Allergy Awareness Month. The various blogs I have read thus far have given me enough and more information than I hope to ever need.  I, for one, like the MM, never thought much of allergies except sympathize with those that had it in some shape or form. We have always been sensitive to allergies, given that we have close friends that we hang out with on a regular basis that suffer from some of these food allergies. A good friend has lived with it for so long that she can tell traces of egg in something she has consumed even if the packaging of the item makes no mention of it. Given her allergies, it is not very surprising that her daughter has inherited the allergy trait from her, not of the egg kind but that of the nuts kind. All parties that we host are planned with these constraints in mind.

Fortunately, our household hasn’t had to deal with food allergies of any kind. All of us have taken well to any food that has been placed in front of us (at least of the kind we have ingested thus far). Ever since I have been married to the OH, I have known that he is allergic to penicillin. Given that there have been minimal trips to the doctor’s office in all these years (touch wood), we haven’t had to worry much about it. When we had Meg, she stayed home in the care of wonderful grandparents for the first year and a half of her life. At 18 months, when we started her at day care, we literally flung open Pandora’s Box. The OH & I can literally count the number of days she went to day care in the first six months with the fingers on just one hand. It was week after week of the dreaded ear infections, cold, coughs and fever. We cruised through antibiotics on a daily basis much akin to multivitamins and it was on our grocery list every single week.

We thankfully got past that stage and all was well and healthy till Raul showed up in our lives. He brought with him a completely different set of issues unrelated to ear infections but closer to the asthmatic kind. He suffered from cold induced asthma and therefore had to be watched real carefully during the winter months. It was during one of these months that he started school and decided to bring home so unwelcome guests of the viral kind. Being the good brother that he is, he had to share it with his big sister. Meg was attacked yet again by the famed ear infection that had plagued her for months when she was a toddler. A trip to the pediatrician was made and she was given the routine antibiotics that she probably still had floating around in her system given the gallons she had ingested in those early years. This time around, we were in for a surprise.  The poor kid, within hours of consuming the medication was breaking out into hives so bad she could hardly get herself up to stand. Little did we think that she was reacting to the medication given her history with said medicine? The following days were spent smearing her with lotions and calamines to soothe her skin and help with the itching. Grandma, the OH and I would take turns settle down the little girl who patiently struggled through her discomfort. We spent days wondering what was up with the rashes and hives with the pediatrician till the connection was made one final day that it was the very same penicillin that she was allergic to. Of course she picked that one thing to inherit from the OH.

The strange thing about this entire incident is that she somehow picked this allergy up along the way. The very same medicine that she had consumed in large quantities was now suddenly something that was not acceptable to her little body. We have since been extremely careful in communicating to the school and any place that requests allergy information that she is allergic to penicillin. This for sure makes it inconvenient but is definitely better than the food allergies suffered by one too many. I have nothing but respect for all the children and parents who deal with these food allergies every single day.

The Mad House

19 11 2008

… awaits the arrival of the last sibling to complete the circle. With kids spanning all age groups, there is not a dull moment. Even phone conversations are choppy and distracted with constant cacophony in the background.

With the journey just a couple of days away, the mad scramble is on to get all things wrapped up, last minute shopping trips completed followed by the much favored (not!) activity of packing. Papers lay scattered around the house with bullet ed lists of things-to-do. The scurry is on to get homework wrapped up, procure permission slips from school and complete last minute transitions at work.

Itineraries are being planned for vacations to be taken during the sojourn back home. Logistics of travel are yet to be made. This not so trivial task is further complicated due to time difference between self and the travel agency helping with the vacation planning. Given that the folks at these travel agencies don’t show up at work till 10:30 am, this makes for many late nights where in beauty sleep has been sacrificed for the sole reason of conversing and clarifying plans with said agents.

The anticipation can be heard and felt on every phone conversations with the crazy siblings. The madness and chaos continues as each of the siblings plans their individual travel plans. Reunion and kodak moments are much anticipated when all individual travel plans conclude the first part of December. When the siblings finally get together to spend evenings and nights together, there are birthday parties to be planned, be it for the sibling who turns 40 or the nephew who turns two. In the midst of all these, are the endless shopping trips for kids, self, family & friends, relatives to visit and catch up with and holidays to celebrate together as one big happy family.

So much to look forward to that it almost makes me feel guilty to be this happy and excited (kala tikka here please!) These are the moments that each one of us eagerly await, savor and etch to memory while we are all spread across various continents, busy in the daily routines, and struggling to find a few quiet moments to talk to each other. These are the moments that will stay in our thoughts as kids grow and make a life of their own. These are the special moments the excited grandparents experience as they welcome and cherish the precious time with their fledglings who flew the nest years back.

Time for new memories and a silent prayer for eternal love and happiness!!

He who plants a tree

14 11 2008

… plants a hope (Lucy Larcom)

One of the early memories I have of living in this country and especially close to the mountains, was watching the trees all around our apartment go from bare and dry in winter, to luscious green in spring and summer followed by the hue of bright colors in fall. This change in nature brought me such pleasure and something to look forward to each season. The OH & I loved to drive through the hills just to enjoy the beauty and splendor of nature, be it the spring greenery or the fall colors.

We moved out of the northeast & to the dry southwest eight years back but the one thing that we have missed much is the change in seasons. We even picked our house in a neighborhood that had plenty of trees but always felt it was never quite the same as living back east (on the flip side we do love not having to shovel snow during winter either). The OH does his share of gardening and loves to surround the house with lovely trees. The pleasure of spending an evening with a nice cup of tea, watching the birds chirp and the kids playing in the greenbelt behind our home is unparalleled.

What brought back all these fun memories, you wonder? It was an interview on NPR as I was driving in to work a couple of days back. Ever wonder how many trees there is to each person that occupies this planet? Dr. Nalini Nadkarni has the answer and the magic number is 61. For more details on how she arrived at this number, check out her interview here.

Go ahead and do your part to add to this number. After all

We can learn a lot from trees:  they’re always grounded but never stop reaching heavenward.  ~Everett Mámor

Range of emotions

10 11 2008

It was one of those weekends when so many things happened but nothing got done. It was a time to experience a range of emotions thanks to various events…

Comfort – that only comes from chatting/catching up with family that you don’t get to meet often thanks to being spread across various continents. Given that we get so little time between all the madness in our lives, it is such fun to chat and catch up with the siblings and their crazy lives. It is always special to be surrounded by the familiar voice of parents as they eagerly await the arrival of their babies & their lil ones.

Rejoice – the gift of time with a dear friend who has been way too preoccupied to remember or reach out.

Pleasure – of spending an evening with friends, over amazing food, watch everyone laugh and giggle over silly jokes that in hindsight is funny only to us, be silly and goofy & retire at a more comfortable setting for a few late night drinks & music.

Happiness – from taking the kids out to watch a movie of their choice and then watch the little one succumb to exhaustion/boredom, fall asleep and gently rest his head on your shoulder, while the older one enjoys every minute of the teen romance being played on screen.

Love – to cozy up in a warm embrace and unwind watching a late night movie after the kids are in bed and there is finally some calm silence.

Resignation – when you realize that every word of advice just flew out the window and you come to terms with the fact that it is finally each person’s right to make their own decisions. It is time to make that silent plea to the forces above to hold our hands in our walk into the future.

Disppointment – that none of the tasks on the to-do list except for one got done.

Excitement – that at least the one item on the to-do list did get done.

Anticipation – of the coming weeks and the upcoming vacation and all the good times between now and the end of the year.

Dog Issues

6 11 2008

Is it easier to train the husband to kennel the dog when we are out at work and the kids are at school or should I train the dog to not raid the pantry and help herself to any food she can lay her paws on?

Not only are the kids in our home spoilt rotten from having grandparents around all their life, but the dog is too. Z, who is now almost 4 yrs has had grandparents raise her since the day we brought her home, when she was a mere 6 week old pup. Grandma and grandpa have raised her with all the patience, extremely loving when she behaves and strict when she misbehaves. And just like the kids, when one set of grandparents left, the next set arrived to take care of her and feed her all the yummy human food.

Strangely, after many years the OH, myself, kids & Z are sans grandparents. Now that the weather in our neck of the woods in lovely, it would be awesome to leave her outside, if not for her all day whining that could irritate and annoy our real understanding and lovely neighbors. We have been leaving her in her kennel when we are gone, but a couple of times when Raul didn’t lock the kennel right, she found her way out and managed to behave herself. The OH, a real sucker to the dog was heartbroken to leave her in her kennel and all he needed was ammunition to prove to me that she didn’t mess things up when she did manage to sneak out.

Given that he leaves later than me in the mornings, I have had no choice but to accept his leaving the dog outside the kennel and to roam free around the house. Though she manages to behave well most times, it takes a lot of effort on our part to ensure that nothing is left within her reach when we are gone. She of course goes for a lot of weird things around the house. Any paper left within her reach is immediately shredded. She loves to rip through the sponge we use for scrubbing our pots.

Last week she dug through the pantry to polish off a bag of marshmallows the kids had left behind. This week it is all the Halloween candy Raul left behind in the pantry. Not only has she ransacked the bag, she has littered it all around his bedroom. Am at my wits end. Time to threaten the OH with serious consequences if he does not leave her in the kennel going forward.

Dog lovers out there, got any wisdom to share?
