Well, apparently this groups of friends can do more than just hang around the family room, drinking and chatting late into the night amidst laughter and silly conversation. All it takes is one trooper to persist and the crew will eventually come around. Every single one of us loves a lit bit of challenge when we put our minds to it, not to mention all the fun we will have after the event talking and laughing about it.
If you are wondering what the heck I am rambling about now, it is a continuation of this. Not long after that exchange the group signed up to particpate in something that 19 out of the 20 participating had never done before. After having lived in this city for almost 9 years, the OH & I were introduced this past weekend to the Dragon Boat Race, an event that occurs every year during spring time in our neighboring city.
Once we had responded with our trademark humor to any such request, the crazy bunch thought it might just be fun to be outdoors and enjoy the good weather and at the same time try to sneak in some exercising of those beat up muscles that never get their workout. We were convinced that we would definitely make the losing team feel better about participating (obviously they couldn’t be last as long as they had us participating!) As our team lead continued to motivate us, our sole objective was to get from Point A to Point B at a decent time and not disrupt the path of the other team participating in the event.
Plans were made, Team names were selected, schedules were checked, practice times were planned and rosters were sent out to the team members. Our first of only two practice sessions prior to the race was scheduled for this past weekend. Thus were born the Desi Churbis
After spending the first half hour listening to the instructor give us some basic lessons on the race, the use of the paddles, some stretching routines, attempting the paddle movement sitting on the lawn, giggling some more and talking about our positions on the boat, we moved on to the next step. We had to place our autographs to assure the association that we wouldn’t come back at them for hurting ourselves in this race. At this point, we were ready to hop on the boat to see if this was even worth the effort.
Once we were on the boat, the competitors in each one of us surfaced and we were ready to take this on with gusto. The remaining 30 minutes flew by and each one of us loved every minute of it. With our minds assured that this was something we could definitely pull off, we were all charged to give this our 100%.
Knowing that this is a team effort, it is comforting to know we are in a group that knows each other a little too well. We realized early enough that we are going to have to be completely synchronized and work together to pull this off. The timings going to have to be perfect and it will have to be 20 pairs of hands working in complete harmony to be where we want to be.
After giving our bodies a healthy ache, we returned home looking forward to the next practice and the competition itself. The competition itself is scheduled for the 28th March. So stay tuned for updates & I just know you guys will be routing for us when the competition dates comes around!!
